Her mother was a military spouse and the family moved to Louisiana by the time Decker was nine. Decker's family relocated out of Louisiana and into Georgia in summer 1995. A representative of the label that was independent Big Yellow Dog Records heard her at 17 and started selling her songs to various labels. The decks were then sent over to L.A. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was then in charge for Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a recording contract. On August 9, 2009 Decker made her debut self-titled album, titled Jessie James. Jessie James enjoyed a modest number of hits and Wanted could make it to the Top 40 on the Singles Charts. Decker was always a country artist, however the album made and promoted it with pop audiences in mind. Decker battled with the label to get more control of her music following two previous singles did not succeed. The album she released next, Boys in the Summer is more country-oriented. Decker's second studio album was released with the name Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, as three of her country tracks failed.
